How can martial arts help my child? Great question!
First off, there are no bench sitters, every child participates and is judged not against others but against their own potential.
Secondly, martial arts are built on the concept of setting children up for success by giving them a series of realistic, short term goals that they can attain relatively quickly while keeping them focused on an exciting, long term goal like black belt. Each time they experience success, their confidence improves until they internalize that with hard work and dedication, they can accomplish just about anything.
And finally, by consistently participating in physical and fitness-oriented activities, they become more physically and mentally coordinated and comfortable with themselves.
Also, bullying has been a growing problem with today’s youth and martial arts training at Shepherd-Warrior Martial Arts can help children at either end of this issue. The child who is being bullied might lack confidence or self-respect – martial arts can help with both. Bullies typically lack confidence or have aggressive tendencies and martial arts helps with self-control and behavior issues.
These six-week courses help students learn how to first lead themselves and then to lead others. Each lesson has a page of notes that the student will fill out and use to study for the Final Exam at the end of the lessons. The lessons learned in Leadership Level 1 are:

Chi-Tu Do Adult Program
Adults often start training at Shepherd-Warrior Martial Arts for reasons other than self-defense – although that’s a great reason to start. Adults primarily train for health benefits and stress relief – self-defense is just an added bonus. People want variety and tend to stick with our program because there is always in instructor who continues to hold them accountable and encourages them toward their goals.
Our acclaimed adult program offers instruction in Chi-Tu Do, an ecclectic system that blends the best of Taekwondo, Kung Fu, Ju Jitsu and Eskrima. All students are trained for self-defense situations and techniques using striking and kicking, defensive principles, grappling and joint locking applications as well as with and against various weapons.
Learn great self-defense and get a fantastic workout too!! Each class is specifically designed to help students learn in a fun and exciting way, but also be able to simultaneously improve their physical fitness and conditioning. You do NOT have to be in good shape to begin this class! We will work with all students to help them reach their goals for fitness.
Krav Maga is an Israeli form of self-defense intended to give you practical tools to protect yourself or your family from physical harm. The Krav Maga system offers real world self defense designed to be easy to learn, easy to remember, and extremely effective. We are certified through the United States Krav Maga Association.
The #1 factor in effective self-defense is dealing with the fear and adrenaline rush that naturally arises in a stressful situation.
FAST stands for Fear Adrenal Stress Training. Scenario-based Adrenal Stress Training has been found to be the most effective means of training people for reality – the reality of confrontation. From bullying to workplace disputes, jerks on the road to domestic violence situations, to actual self-defense against an attack – confrontation happens in our lives practically every day.
Adrenal Stress Training teaches people how to deal with the emotions that often accompany confrontation.
We have a variety of FAST programs in the near future. If you’ve never participated in our self-defense program, you should attend a FAST Basics course. After that, you will be able to attend any other class we teach (Weapons Defense, Ground Defense, Stress Shooting, etc.) if you choose to. FAST Basics covers the necessary skills to be successful in the other modules. Classes range typically from $20-50 each, depending. We often do them at our facility, but we can also go to you if you have a group or business that needs this training.
This course is specifically designed for kids ages 8-14 and teaches assertiveness and self-protection skills in a fun, safe environment. Children are shown, through role playing scenarios, how to skillfully deal with bullies and stop them in their tracks!
Kids will also learn how to avoid common playground altercations, protect “personal space” and possessions, as well as how to handle name calling and teasing. They will learn physical escapes from grabs and pushes and verbal skills to back off a bully. This course instills confidence and assertiveness and empowers children to not be victims of bullying.
In this course you will learn to defend yourself against a predator with a weapon, which can be one of the most frightening and dangerous of situations. Utilizing skills learned in the Basics course, this class will give you the following skills and experience:
Defensive techniques against edged weapons (knives) and projectile weapons (guns)
Frontal threats with both knives to the neck and guns to the head
Rear threats with both knives and guns
Rear choke attack with a knife
FULL FORCE scenario training against armed padded assailant.
This is perhaps the most important seminar you can take if you own a firearm, or are considering owning one. This training gives you the experience of appropriately and effectively drawing a firearm and shooting at a real person if and when you ever need to.
This 4-hour course on scenario-based firearms training for self defense is not a “sport” or “target shooting” class. We don’t teach tactical magazine changes, clearing stovepipes and other such technical skills. We do teach how to handle yourself under stress and to control the situation as well as your emotions.
The difference between static sighted fire and adrenal stress point shooting and when it is tactically beneficial to use each
Verbal de-escalation using your voice and a firearm to deter an attacker
Stepping off the attack line of a charging aggressor to gain advantage
How to defeat “the 21-foot rule”
In the final scenario we use air-soft guns against a live aggressor so there is no need for any “guess work.” The aggressor knows when, if and where he was hit and responds accordingly. So both he and you know for sure if you survived the scenario or not.
